Fire Hose
A fire hose is a crucial tool in firefighting, designed to transport water or other fire-retardant materials such as foam to a fire to extinguish it. These hoses are capable of carrying high-pressure water volumes and are integral to the firefighting process, whether used in urban firefighting or combating forest fires.
History and Evolution
The development of fire hoses has evolved significantly over time. Originally, fire hoses were made from leather, which was both bulky and unreliable. The invention of the vulcanization process was a turning point, allowing raw soft rubber to be cured into a more durable and useful product. This led to the transition from leather hoses to unlined linen hoses, and eventually to rubber-lined hoses with fabric reinforcement.
These early rubber hoses were as cumbersome as their leather counterparts but did not suffer from leakage, offering improved durability. The design of these hoses resembled some modern industrial hoses, like those used for fuel delivery in airline servicing.
Modern Construction
Contemporary fire hoses are made using a combination of natural and synthetic fabrics and elastomers. This modern construction allows hoses to be stored wet without the risk of rotting and provides resistance against the damaging effects of sunlight and chemicals. The use of these materials has resulted in hoses that are lighter, which reduces the physical strain on firefighters.
Types of Fire Hoses
-
Suction Hose: Built to withstand pressures of 10.5 bar, suction hoses are utilized to draw water from a source to the pump.
-
Delivery Hose: These hoses connect to the pump's outlet and transport water at a pressure greater than atmospheric pressure. Delivery hoses are categorized into two types:
- Percolating Hose: Primarily used in fighting forest fires, these hoses allow some water to seep through the fabric to keep the exterior wet and less susceptible to burning.
- Non-Percolating Hose: These are designed to keep all the water contained within the hose.
Fire Hose Accessories
Several accessories enhance the functionality of fire hoses:
- Hose Couplings: These are connectors that link hoses together or to other equipment like taps or pumps.
- Hose Reels: These devices help store hoses in a compact and ready-to-use manner, often mounted on walls or trucks.
- Hose Towers: Structures designed for drying fire hoses after use.
