Exo Commuter Rail
Exo Commuter Rail is an extensive network of commuter rail services that operate within the Greater Montreal, Quebec, area. The network serves as a crucial component of the regional transit system, connecting suburban and exurban areas to the urban core. The network is managed by the Réseau de transport métropolitain (RTM), branded as Exo.
History and Management
Originally, the operation of commuter rail services in the Greater Montreal area was contracted to Canadian National Railway (CN) and Canadian Pacific Kansas City (CPKC). However, in 2017, the responsibility was transferred to the RTM, which later adopted the Exo brand in May 2018. The goal was to streamline and modernize the service, emphasizing the sub- and exurban nature of the service area.
Network Composition
Exo's commuter rail network consists of five main lines, each serving different regions within Greater Montreal:
- Mont-Saint-Hilaire Line: This line utilizes CN trackage and caters to commuters in the southern regions.
- Mascouche Line: Operating on CN tracks, this line connects the northeast suburbs to the city center.
- Vaudreuil–Hudson Line: Running on CPKC tracks, this line serves the western suburbs and operates from the Lucien-L'Allier station.
- Saint-Jérôme Line: This line operates partially on Exo's own tracks between Sainte-Thérèse and Saint-Jérôme, providing service to the northern regions.
- Candiac Line: Also utilizing CPKC tracks, this line links the southwestern suburbs to Montreal's downtown.
Infrastructure and Operations
Exo's network is characterized by its use of diesel-electric push-pull trains, which are well-suited to the radial configuration of the network. The Lucien-L'Allier terminus in downtown Montreal serves as a crucial hub for several lines, facilitating efficient commuter traffic flow into the city. The network’s infrastructure is a blend of tracks owned by Exo itself, as well as CN and CPKC tracks.
Key Stations and Terminals
The Lucien-L'Allier station is a significant commuter rail terminal in Montreal, serving as the primary endpoint for the Vaudreuil–Hudson, Saint-Jérôme, and Candiac lines. Dorval station is another vital intermodal hub in the network, offering connections between commuter rail and bus services.
Future Developments
Exo is continually evaluating opportunities for network expansion and service enhancements.
