Errenteria (Basque: Errenteria, Spanish: Rentería) is a vibrant town located in the province of Gipuzkoa in the Basque Autonomous Community, in the north of Spain, close to the French border. It is one of the significant urban centers in the Basque region, known for its rich history and cultural heritage.

Historical Background

The town of Errenteria was founded in 1320 during the reign of Alfonso XI of Castile, originally named Villanueva de Oiarso or Oyarço. Its early history is closely tied to the iron export industry, and it became commonly known as "La Rentería" because it housed the office responsible for collecting export taxes, referred to as "rentas reales" in medieval Castilian.

By the end of the 16th century, the Basque name "Errenteria" began to gain prevalence. In 1998, the town hall officially adopted Errenteria as the town's name, reflecting its Basque identity.

Geography and Environment

Errenteria is traversed by the Oiartzun River, which has been a critical natural feature in the town's development. In recent years, the river has undergone significant restoration efforts to address pollution issues and restore its ecological balance.
