Election Commission of India
The Election Commission of India (ECI) is a constitutional body responsible for administering elections in India. The commission was established in accordance with the provisions of Article 324 of the Indian Constitution, with the mandate to ensure free and fair elections across the country. The ECI is tasked with conducting elections to the Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, and the offices of the President of India and Vice President of India, as well as to state legislative assemblies and councils.
Structure and Functions
The Election Commission is composed of the Chief Election Commissioner of India (CEC) and two Election Commissioners. The CEC and the Election Commissioners are appointed by the President of India. Decisions within the commission are made by majority vote. The commission has the power to supervise, direct, and control the entire process of elections in India.
Conduct of Elections
The ECI is responsible for the preparation and revision of electoral rolls, the conduct of elections, and ensuring the model code of conduct is followed by political parties and candidates. It also regulates election expenses and monitors electoral malpractices. The commission has the authority to disqualify candidates who violate electoral guidelines.
Electronic Voting
In its efforts to modernize the election process, the ECI has implemented the use of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs). These machines were developed to streamline the voting process and ensure accuracy in counting votes, thus bolstering the integrity of the electoral process.
Voter Identification
To facilitate the identification process during elections, the ECI issues Voter ID cards to all eligible voters. These cards serve as proof of identity and eligibility to vote, a crucial measure to prevent impersonation and other forms of electoral fraud.
Delimitation Commission
The Delimitation Commission of India is a related body tasked with redrawing the boundaries of constituencies based on recent census data. This ensures fair representation across different regions in the legislative bodies.
State Election Commissions
In addition to the national body, each state in India has its own State Election Commission responsible for conducting elections to local bodies such as municipalities and panchayats. These commissions operate under the supervision of the ECI to maintain consistency and uphold electoral standards across the nation.
