Effluent sewer systems, also known as septic tank effluent gravity (STEG), solids-free sewer (SFS), or septic tank effluent drainage (STED) systems, are an innovative approach to wastewater management. These systems are designed to convey the liquid portion of sewage from septic tanks to either a centralized sewage treatment plant or a distributed treatment system for further processing. This method is particularly beneficial in areas where traditional sewer systems might be impractical or cost-prohibitive.

Structure and Function

Effluent sewer systems integrate septic tanks to collect sewage from residences and businesses. The solid materials settle in the tank, while the liquid effluent is conveyed through small-diameter pipes to a downstream treatment facility or disposal site. These pipes are typically buried just a meter or two underground and can follow the natural contour of the land, which minimizes excavation and infrastructure costs.

Gravity and Pressure Systems

Effluent sewer systems utilize either gravity or pressure systems to transport wastewater:

  • Gravity Systems: Pipes are laid on a slight downhill slope, utilizing the force of gravity to move wastewater towards the treatment facility. This method is energy-efficient but requires specific terrain conditions, making it unsuitable for flat or hilly areas.

  • Pressure Systems: These use pumps to propel wastewater through the system, allowing for more flexible pipe routes. This approach is advantageous in areas where gravity systems are not feasible due to topographical constraints.
