Eastern Gorilla
The eastern gorilla (Gorilla beringei) is a critically endangered species of the genus Gorilla and represents the largest living primate. The species is divided into two subspecies: the Mountain Gorilla (Gorilla beringei beringei) and the Eastern Lowland Gorilla or Grauer's gorilla (Gorilla beringei graueri).
Habitat
Eastern gorillas are primarily found in the dense forests of eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, southwestern Uganda, and northwestern Rwanda. They inhabit altitudes ranging from lowland tropical forests to the cloud forests of the Virunga Mountains. This habitat diversity supports their varied diet and complex social structures.
Diet
The diet of the eastern gorilla is predominantly herbivorous, consisting mostly of leaves, stems, fruit, and flowers. They occasionally consume small insects and snails. The variation in their diet is influenced by the availability of food resources across different seasons and habitats. Mountain gorillas tend to consume more leaves and stems due to the higher altitude forests they inhabit, whereas the eastern lowland gorillas, residing in lower altitude forests, have greater access to fruit.
Social Structure
Eastern gorillas live in family groups led by a dominant male known as a silverback. These groups can include several adult females and their offspring. The social structure within the group is cohesive, with strong bonds formed between members. The presence of a silverback ensures the protection and cohesion of the group, along with the care of young gorillas.
Conservation
The eastern gorilla is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The primary threats to their survival include habitat destruction due to deforestation and agricultural expansion, poaching, and diseases like the Ebola virus. Conservation efforts include habitat protection, anti-poaching measures, and community-based conservation programs. The Agreement on the Conservation of Gorillas and Their Habitats is an international effort dedicated to the preservation of gorilla species and their natural habitats.
