Diergaarde Blijdorp
Diergaarde Blijdorp, also known as Rotterdam Zoo, is a prominent zoological garden located in the northwestern part of Rotterdam, Netherlands. Officially overseen by the Stichting Koninklijke Rotterdamse Diergaarde or the "Royal Rotterdam Zoo Foundation," it is celebrated as one of the oldest and most renowned zoos in the country.
History
The origins of Diergaarde Blijdorp trace back to 1855 when a garden was established for pheasants and waterfowl in the city center near the Kruiskade. This initiative proved successful, leading to the opening of the Rotterdamsche Diergaarde on May 18, 1857. In the same year, the Vereniging Rotterdamsche Diergaarde (Rotterdam Zoo Association) was founded to manage the establishment.
Facing the need for expansion, it was decided in 1932 to reorganize the zoo. By 1937, plans were made to relocate the zoo to a new site in the Blijdorp district. The municipality of Rotterdam facilitated this move by exchanging land with the zoo. As a result, Diergaarde Blijdorp acquired two-thirds of a new 13-hectare site while the remaining land was leased at a nominal fee of one guilder.
In 2007, Blijdorp Zoo celebrated its 150th anniversary, marking a significant milestone in its storied history.
Layout and Features
Spanning 34 hectares (84 acres), Diergaarde Blijdorp is organized into several distinct zoogeographic regions, showcasing an impressive array of 562 species. The zoo features a variety of amenities, including cafes, a shop, and an information center, designed to enhance the visitor experience.
Oceanium
One of the significant attractions within the zoo is the Oceanium, a public aquarium that opened in 2001. The Oceanium is part of the expansion area of the zoo and offers visitors a captivating glimpse into marine life.
Notable Residents
Among the many animals housed in Diergaarde Blijdorp, several have gained prominence:
- Bokito, a western gorilla, became famous after an escape incident in 2007. His story brought significant media attention to the zoo.
- The zoo is also home to species such as the Celebes crested macaque, King penguin, and Rankin's dragon.
