Central Seberang Perai

Central Seberang Perai is a district located within Seberang Perai, which is part of the Malaysian state of Penang. Seberang Perai itself is situated on the Malay Peninsula and is separated from Penang Island by the Penang Strait. It is one of the three districts that make up Seberang Perai, alongside the North Seberang Perai District and the South Seberang Perai District.

Administrative Structure

The governance of Central Seberang Perai falls under the jurisdiction of the Seberang Perai City Council, which was formed after several reorganizations throughout the 20th century. This area was initially part of the Province Wellesley Rural Board, which was split into three rural district councils in 1953. The district councils underwent further consolidation, eventually merging the Butterworth and Bukit Mertajam municipal governments with the rural district councils of the North and Central districts in 1961.

Bukit Mertajam

This suburb is a significant urban center within the district and plays a crucial role in the judicial system of Seberang Perai. The Bukit Mertajam Magistrates Court handles central district cases, operating alongside the Butterworth Magistrates Court for the northern district.

Economy and Infrastructure

The district is home to significant economic zones, including the Perai Free Industrial Zone. This free trade zone is located within the suburb of Perai, contributing to the district's economic activity and industrial growth.
