The settlement was largely abandoned during the U.S. Conquest of California in 1848. It remained undeveloped until 1888 when Santiago J. Duckworth initiated the development of a summer colony. The formation of the Carmel Development Company in 1902 marked the transformation of Carmel into an art colony and seaside resort, leading to its incorporation as a city in 1916.
