Canberra is the capital city of Australia and the primary settlement within the Australian Capital Territory (ACT). Unlike most cities, Canberra is an entirely planned city, conceptualized in the early 20th century following the Federation of Australia. It serves as the political and administrative heart of the nation.
Historical Background
The region surrounding Canberra has been inhabited for up to 21,000 years by Indigenous Australians, including the Ngunnawal and Ngambri peoples. European settlement began in the 19th century, leaving behind historic landmarks such as St John's Anglican Church and Blundells Cottage.
In 1901, the federation of the Australian colonies led to the formation of the Commonwealth of Australia. The site for the national capital was chosen in 1908 as a compromise between rivals Sydney and Melbourne, and Canberra was officially named in 1913.
Urban Design and Development
Canberra's design was the result of an international competition won by American architects Walter Burley Griffin and Marion Mahony Griffin. Influenced by the Garden City Movement, their plan featured geometric motifs and axes aligned with significant topographical landmarks such as Black Mountain, Mount Ainslie, Capital Hill, and City Hill. The design is best viewed from vantage points like the Telstra Tower or the summit of Mount Ainslie.

Canberra is situated at the northern tip of the Australian Alps, the highest mountain range in the country. The city experiences a continental climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and cold winters, occasionally punctuated by snowfall.
