California Fire Safe Council (CFSC)
The California Fire Safe Council (CFSC) is a pivotal organization in the state of California, dedicated to enhancing wildfire preparedness and resiliency among communities. CFSC provides comprehensive support through grant funding, programmatic support, and technical assistance to help communities across California combat the increasing threat of wildfires.
Mission and Vision
CFSC's mission is to supply resources and support for community-led initiatives focused on wildfire resiliency. As the statewide fire safe council, CFSC aids a network of over 300 local fire safe councils throughout the state. These councils are grassroots, community-based organizations aimed at reducing vulnerability to catastrophic wildfires. CFSC envisions a future where California's most vulnerable communities not only coexist safely with wildfires but also thrive amidst the challenges posed by climate change.
Activities and Programs
CFSC's activities include outreach and education, landscape, community, and parcel-level mitigation efforts, as well as planning and community hardening. These initiatives are crucial in ensuring communities are well-prepared and resilient against wildfires.
One of CFSC's cornerstone programs is the County Coordinator program, launched in 2021 with funding from CAL Fire. This program has been instrumental in orchestrating strategic fire mitigation interventions across the state. Currently, 52 out of the 58 counties in California benefit from active county coordinators. These coordinators operate within various county-wide organizations such as Fire Safe Councils, Fire Districts, or Resource Conservation Districts.
Impact and Importance
CFSC plays a critical role in California's fire management strategy. The organization not only enhances community awareness and preparedness but also provides a vital link between local fire safe councils and state-level resources. This collaboration is essential in a state that has experienced some of the most devastating wildfires in U.S. history, such as the Camp Fire (2018), which marked a significant moment in California's ongoing battle with wildfires.
