California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (known as CAL FIRE) is a division of the California Natural Resources Agency that plays a crucial role in the fire protection and stewardship of over 31 million acres of California's privately-owned wildlands. It is responsible for providing various emergency services across 36 of the state’s 58 counties in collaboration with local governments.

CAL FIRE’s Reforestation Services Program is dedicated to the production of containerized stock of conifer tree species, which are used for reforestation on private and state-owned lands. This program also maintains a seed bank of source-identified native conifer species, crucial for preserving the biodiversity and ecological health of California’s forests.

Campfire Permits

The department issues campfire permits, which are necessary for camping in many areas of California. These permits, which can be obtained online or at any CAL FIRE, USDA Forest Service, or Bureau of Land Management facility, help prevent unauthorized and potentially harmful fires.

CAL FIRE has been at the forefront of managing and mitigating some of the most significant wildfires in California's history, such as the Camp Fire of 2018, which was one of the deadliest and most destructive wildfires in the state's history.
