History

Brunei has a rich history dating back to the 7th century when it was part of the Srivijaya Empire. In the 14th century, it became the center of a powerful Malay Sultanate, known as the Sultanate of Brunei, which controlled much of Borneo and the Philippines.

The Bruneian Empire experienced a decline due to European colonial expansion and internal conflict, eventually becoming a British protectorate in 1888. Brunei achieved independence from the United Kingdom on January 1, 1984.

Government and Politics

Brunei is an absolute monarchy, with the Sultan of Brunei serving as both the head of state and head of government. The current Sultan, Hassanal Bolkiah, has reigned since 1967 and has overseen the modernization of the country while maintaining Islamic traditions.

The economy of Brunei is largely dependent on the export of oil and natural gas, which contribute to its high GDP per capita. The Brunei dollar is the country's currency, and it is interchangeable with the Singapore dollar.

Brunei's culture is deeply rooted in Malay traditions and Islamic values. The Brunei Malay language is the official language, and Islam is the state religion.

Brunei celebrates many cultural and religious festivals, with Hari Raya Aidilfitri and the Sultan's birthday being the most significant events.

Geography

Brunei is divided into two unconnected parts and consists of four districts: Brunei-Muara, Tutong, Belait, and Temburong. The capital city, Bandar Seri Begawan, is located in Brunei-Muara and serves as the nation's political and economic hub.

The country is known for its lush rainforests, part of which is preserved in the Ulu Temburong National Park, showcasing the nation's commitment to environmental conservation.
