The Bixi Bicycle Share System is a notable public bicycle-sharing service originally developed in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Launched in May 2009 by the Public Bike System Company (PBSC), Bixi was the pioneer large-scale bike-sharing initiative in North America and served as the prototype for subsequent systems worldwide.

Bixi's technological infrastructure was developed by 8D Technologies, which created the wireless bike station terminals equipped with RFID technology for bike docking. The system operates on solar energy, underscoring its commitment to reducing environmental impact and optimizing energy efficiency. Originally operated by Stationnement de Montréal, a division of the city’s parking authority, Bixi's financial difficulties in late 2013 led to bankruptcy in early 2014. The City of Montreal subsequently acquired PBSC's assets, forming Bixi Montréal, a non-profit organization, to oversee operations.

Bixi's model has expanded beyond Montreal, with systems such as Bike Share Toronto and Capital Bixi in Ottawa, Ontario, and Gatineau, Quebec adapting its framework. In the U.S., Bixi became the second-most used bicycle-sharing system by 2023.

Bicycle Design and Features

The bicycles used within the Bixi system are manufactured by Cycles Devinci in Saguenay, Quebec. They are characterized by their sturdy frames, weighing approximately 18 kg (40 lb). For safety and visibility, each bike is equipped with twin LED rear lights inside the frame and a white LED light in the front. In 2019, Bixi introduced blue electric bicycles to its fleet, enhancing the accessibility and convenience of its service.
