Benches

A bench is a long seat on which multiple people may sit simultaneously. Benches are typically made of wood, but may also be constructed from metal, stone, or synthetic materials. Many benches have backrests, while others do not and can be accessed from either side. Armrests are another common feature.

Types of Benches

Park Benches

Park benches are set as seating places within public parks and vary in the number of people they can seat. They are commonly constructed of plastic, wood, metal, or stone. These benches are often donated by persons or associations, as indicated by an affixed plaque, a common form of memorial to a deceased person.

Garden Benches

Garden benches are similar to park benches but are typically longer and offer more sitting places. They are designed to blend with the natural surroundings and are often made from materials like wood or metal.

Storage Benches

Storage benches are multifunctional pieces of furniture that provide seating as well as storage space. They are ideal for storing outdoor cushions, garden tools, or children's toys. These benches are usually made from plastic to ensure they are waterproof and can protect the items stored inside from adverse weather conditions.

Planter Benches

Planter benches have one or more planters attached to them. These benches are perfect for patios, decking, or courtyard gardens where there aren’t flower beds nearby, as they provide a place for flowers to grow.

Indoor Benches

Indoor benches offer a place for people to sit whenever they leave or enter the home to put their shoes on or off. They are often used in entryways, dining areas, or as decorative accents in living rooms and bedrooms.

Weight Benches

Weight benches are used in gyms for various exercises. There are three main types: flat, adjustable incline, and adjustable incline-decline. These benches are essential for exercises like bench presses and other weight training activities.

Swinging Benches

Swinging benches are sometimes strung from a common steel or wooden frame, called a swing set, permitting more than one person to indulge in the swing at the same time. These benches are popular in gardens and parks.

Accent Benches

Accent benches can act as additional seating, a place to rest books or throws, or add character that enforces your décor style. They are often used in living rooms or bedrooms as substitutes for larger sofas.

Materials Used in Benches

Wood

Wooden benches are the most traditional and enduring styles. Hardwoods like oak, ash, or balau are usually finished with a UV and weather-resisting sealant that protects while letting the natural beauty of the wood shine through.

Metal

Metal benches are durable and often used in public spaces. They can be made from various metals such as stainless steel, aluminum, or wrought iron. Metal benches are usually treated to resist rust and corrosion.

Stone

Stone benches are extremely durable and often used in public parks. They provide a simple, minimalist look and are resistant to weather changes.

Plastic

Plastic benches are a great option for those on a limited budget. They are durable and can be made from materials like polycarbonate or wood-plastic composites.
