The first tramway line in Barcelona was inaugurated on 28 June 1872, connecting Barcelona to Gràcia (Josepets), initially operating as a horse-drawn tramway. This pioneering venture laid the foundations for an extensive tram network that would eventually integrate Barcelona's metropolitan area.
Expansion and Electrification
As the city expanded, so too did the tram networks, which extended into many surrounding villages that later became part of modern Barcelona. The Cerdá Plan, a visionary urban expansion project, facilitated the tramways by providing wide streets and intersections with chamfered corners, allowing for easy maneuvering.
By the early 1900s, two main companies dominated the tramway operations: Barcelona Tramways and Compañía General de Tranvías.
