Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil

The Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil (Portuguese: Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil – IEAB) is the 19th province of the Anglican Communion, a global community of churches in communion with the Archbishop of Canterbury. It serves the entire nation of Brazil and is composed of nine dioceses and one missionary district. Each diocese is led by a bishop, and one among them is elected as the Primate of Brazil.

History

The roots of the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil can be traced back to the late 19th century. In 1890, missionaries from the Episcopal Church, based in the United States of America, established themselves in Brazil. Their mission was distinct in that, unlike the English chapels which primarily served expatriates, they conducted services in Portuguese and aimed to convert native Brazilians. This made the Anglican community more accessible and integrative within Brazilian society.

Initially, the Anglican community in Brazil operated as a missionary district under the auspices of the Episcopal Church. It wasn't until 1965 that it achieved ecclesiastical independence, marking its formal establishment as a separate province within the Anglican Communion.

Early Challenges and Developments

During its early years, the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil faced several challenges. Although the Church of England had opposed the slave trade, some Anglicans in Brazil were slave owners, reflecting the complexities and contradictions of the church's early history. Despite these challenges, the church was instrumental in promoting religious diversity during a time when Roman Catholicism was the dominant religious force in Brazil.

Modern Day

Today, the Anglican Episcopal Church of Brazil is recognized for its commitment to social justice and inclusivity. It is actively involved in various social projects and has taken progressive stances on issues such as homosexuality and women's ordination. The church's commitment to these values is exemplified by the election of Marinez Santos Bassotto as one of its bishops.
