Anglican Diocese of Ijesha North Missionary

The Anglican Diocese of Ijesha North Missionary is a significant ecclesiastical entity within the Anglican Communion, specifically part of the Church of Nigeria. It is one of the 17 dioceses found in the Anglican Province of Ibadan, a province that is part of the 14 ecclesiastical provinces distributed throughout Nigeria.

Foundation and History

The idea for the formation of the Ijesha North Missionary Diocese emerged in October 2007. The initial proposition was made during the tenure of Ven. Olumakaiye, who was then the Vicar and Archdeacon of the Ìjẹ̀bú-Jẹ̀ṣà Archdeaconry. The diocese was conceived as a way to carve out a distinct administrative and spiritual region from the already existing Ilesa Diocese.

The proposal was championed by key figures in the church, including Chief S.O. Ogundare, the then Baba Egbe Ijo of Saint Matthew’s Anglican Church, Ijebu–Jesa. Efforts were made to gather support from members within and outside the Ijesa North region. Despite encountering several challenges, the initiative succeeded due to concerted efforts and effective management of obstacles.

On September 25, 2008, the proposal for the Ijesha North Missionary Diocese received approval during the Standing Committee of the Church of Nigeria Anglican Communion, which was held in the Diocese of Abuja. Alongside this, the Ilesa South-West Diocese was also established, with both dioceses being carved out of the old Ilesa Diocese.

Structure and Leadership

In terms of leadership, the diocese is guided by a bishop. As of 2015, Bishop Isaac Oluyamo has been serving as the Bishop of the Ijesha North Missionary Diocese. The diocese's cathedral, Holy Trinity Church, is located in Omofe.

Cultural and Religious Context

The diocese is situated in Osun State, a region rich in Yoruba culture and history. The Yoruba people have a long history intertwined with Christianity, especially through the efforts of native missionaries accompanying early missionary expeditions such as the Niger Expedition.
